Cignetti led the IUP Indians to the title game of the NCAA Division II Football Championship in 1990 and 1993.
Recently he served as the head football coach at West Virginia University from 1976 to 1979. He is one of the best coaches in American football history. His team won 10 Lambert Cups, as the best Division II team in the eastern United States.
Cignetti was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2013. He also IUP renamed its football field in honor of Cignetti.
He died on 10 September 2022 at the age of 84.
